It’s the time of year where deer are darting onto the roadways.
PennDOT says deer are most active in October and November. That’s due to two reasons…it’s the peak of their breeding season, and our days are shorter, meaning commuters’ time on the roadways aligns with the increased movements of the deer from dusk to dawn.
Statistics show nearly half of all reportable crashes in the past five years involving deer happened in this month and next…with nearly 80 percent taking place between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. Last year, there were over 3,000 crashes involving deer statewide, resulting in more than 600 injuries and eleven deaths.
In Butler County, 22 drivers were hurt in deer crashes in 2014 and one person was killed.
To reduce the risk of a deer-related crash, drivers should slow down, be especially cautious during morning and evening hours, increase your distance between vehicles and be aware that deer often travel in groups.
To report a dead deer on state roads, call 1-800-FIX-ROAD.
