Back to school time also means more school buses on the roadways. PennDOT has tips for drivers to help keep our kids safe while they get on and off the bus.
First of all, stopping for a school bus is a law in Pennsylvania. You must do it.
Tips:
-Drivers must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have their red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
-You have to stop whether you’re behind the bus, meeting the bus or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped.
-If you’re traveling alongside a bus, you too must stop.
-If physical barriers such as grassy medians, guide rails or concrete median barriers separate oncoming traffic from the bus, you may proceed without stopping
Failure to do any of these actions will not only put a student at risk, but also leave you with a $250 fine, five point on your driving record and a possible 60-day suspension of your license.
Officials urge drivers to pay extra attention the next few weeks, as you’ve not encountered buses the last several months and it’s easy to forget what to do.
Drivers are also reminded to be aware of kids running across roads to catch the bus. Some can become so concerned with missing a school bus that they forget to look before they cross.
