The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is working to clear up any potential confusion about what will be required for residents to be issued a REAL ID.
“After Oct. 1, 2020, a federally-accepted form of identification- whether it’s the forthcoming Pennsylvania REAL ID drivers license or ID card, a US Passport or Passport Card, a military ID, etc. – must be used as identification to board a commercial aircraft or visit a secure federal building,” Deputy Secretary for Driver and Vehicle Services Kurt Myers said.
Many Pennsylvanians who received their first drivers’ license after September of 2003 can apply for REAL ID pre-verification online since PennDOT already has necessary electronic documents on file. However, those who do not fall into this group will need to bring the required documents to a Driver’s License Center for verification.
Beginning Sept. 1, those interested in obtaining a REAL ID will need to gather proof of identity, proof of social security number, proof of any legal name changes, and two proofs of their current physical address.
“REAL IDs will be available to customers who want them in March of 2019,” Myers said. “There is no requirement that any resident obtain a REAL ID and PennDOT will continue to offer its standard issue drivers licenses and photo IDs.”
Customers seeking a REAL ID will pay a one-time fee of $30, plus a renewal fee of just over $30 every four years. More information about the REAL ID rollout process can be found on the PennDOT website.
