Monday’s school bus crash was the second bus crash on a specific area of Route 228 in Adams Township in three months.
The area of Route 228- near Beaver Street Extension- is an active construction zone. PennDOT Public Information Officer for District 10 Deborah Casadei says the road is being widened. The project is not scheduled to be completed until June 2019.
“An intersection improvement project is taking place on Route 228 and Pittsburgh Street by Gulisek Construction of Mt. Pleasant, PA. The project is ahead of schedule this year and is currently making preparations to pave the new widening and alignment in order to accommodate the traffic switch. This switch was not scheduled to occur until June of 2019. If the paving can be completed this season and the traffic phase implemented, we hope to finish the project early. The contractor is placing and fine grading sub base currently in anticipation of paving to begin soon, weather dependent,” Casadei said in email on Tuesday.
Back in July, a school bus crashed near the same area to Monday’s crash. In July, there were no students on the bus and the driver was not seriously injured. The bus traveled off the road and was left dangling over the hillside.
Casadei says the department is currently reviewing the current work zone setup on Route 228.
“The contractor is working toward completing the pavement structure where the drop off condition exists that warrants the barrier. There are currently 20,000 vehicles per day traveling on this section of SR 228. The speed limit is reduced through the work zone to 40 mph. The current configuration of traffic is a single lane in each direction with a slight shift the lanes to accommodate the barrier on the shoulder,” she said.
According to Casadei, a guiderail was damaged in July’s crash and was not repaired after the accident, but the crash on Monday was on a different part of the road.
“The guiderail was delineated with construction devices and all guiderail along the north side of 228 was scheduled to be replaced next week as part of the project work. The bus impacted the barrier and then impacted the guiderail in an area that was not damaged in the previous accident,” Casadei said.
