The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is announcing preparations for the upcoming winter season.
PennDOT operates 166 plow trucks, 40 loaders, 19 anti-icing trucks, and 10 graders throughout District 10. These vehicles will cover just under 7,000 miles across Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Indiana, and Jefferson counties.
Drivers are also being reminded of safe driving practices during the winter season including:
- Turn on low beams when visibility is low even during day time hours
- Turn off cruise control when roads are snow covered, wet, or icy
- When roads have packed snow, accumulation cut speeds to half and when icy slow to a crawl and keep increased distance from other cars
- Always have a brush/scraper in your car along with extra food, water, blankets, and phone charger
- Be patient with snowplows. It takes one hour for an inch of snow to drop and snowplow routes are often four hours. So by the time a plow returns another four inches may have come down.
Finally, motorists can always check road conditions on 511PA.com.
