This week is Work Zone Safety Week and PennDOT officials are urging caution for drivers going through construction areas.
As projects ramp up this time of year, PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll says the number of work zone incidents remain too high.
“Last year, there were 153 intrusions–vehicles into work zones–that PennDOT and our contractors had to deal with,” Carroll said. “Of those, 14 resulted in injuries to PennDOT employees. We need to prevent that from happening.”
Each year during Work Zone Safety Week, worker memorials are put on display to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in work zone crashes.
Since 1970, PennDOT has lost 90 workers due to vehicle crashes.
