Motorists in southern Butler County should be aware of a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation project beginning Monday that is expected to result in additional congestion and delays in an already busy area.
Crews expected to begin work on Route 228- between Beaver Street Extension and Mars-Valencia Road- to make safety improvements including adding new turning lanes, signal improvements and drainage upgrades.
Traffic will be controlled by flaggers and Adams Township Police, if necessary, to facilitate the asphalt paving to build up the intersection of SR 228 and SR 3019/Pittsburgh Street until the grade is met on either side of the intersection. Paving tie-ins on Route 228 at both the east and west ends of the project will also occur in order to switch traffic from the current lanes of travel to the new widening in both directions.
Traffic will also be put onto the new widening on Pittsburgh Street and Warrendale Road. This traffic switch will allow the contractor to complete the remaining half of the box culvert on Route 228 while also performing drainage, paving, sidewalk, and signal work between both Route 228 and Pittsburgh Street.
No long-term lane restrictions will occur between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on weekdays. No lane restrictions will occur between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays. No lane restrictions will occur between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Sundays, according to PennDOT.
Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution in work zones, and obey flaggers and other traffic control devices. Expect congestion and delays in the project area. Fines are doubled for violations in work zones.
