A popular event this weekend combines classic cars with fun for the whole family.
Kent Shoemaker of the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Department is one of the organizers of the annual Mega Cruise at the Butler County Airport, “This is the 16th year and it’s gained a good reputation. When I pass flyers out, a lot of people will say to me, oh yeah I’m coming to that, we’ll be there. We’ve gotten a lot of cars. I think last year we had around 600 cars so this year, who knows, maybe more.”
Gates open for spectators at 2 p.m. but those bringing vehicles can get in around noon. This event also includes a karaoke dance in the hanger from 6 to 10 p.m. as well as a 50/50 raffle, a Chinese auction, commemorative shirts, beverages, and fireworks.
Although this event benefits the Penn Township VFD, Shoemaker says it has become more than a fundraiser.
“It’s not a great fundraiser as far as making money for the fire department. There are other things that we could do that would raise a lot more money. But it has become an excellent community event. I think last year we estimated around 2,500 people came through the gate, just as spectators,” Shoemaker said.
A $2 donation is recommended per person although those attending are welcome to contribute more.
