The Pittsburgh Penguins have placed goaltender Casey DeSmith on waivers. This comes after the team signed DeSmith to a three-year contract extension worth $1.25 million in January. The team is facing a salary cap challenge, and will go with Tristan Jarry, a less expensive option, as back-up to Matt Murray. DeSmith just got married in July, and is in the process of buying a house in the Pittsburgh area. IF he passes through waivers, he will head to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. But he can be claimed by any NHL team.
The Pens begin their season Thursday at PPG Paints Arena against Buffalo. Bryan Rust and Zach Trotman have been placed on long-term injured reserve. Rust suffered a broken hand blocking a shot in the final exhibition game Saturday.
A number of other NHL teams are dealing with salary cap issues, and have placed a number of veterans on waivers. Former Penguin Daniel Sprong was waived by Anaheim, who acqured him from the Pens via trade last season.
