The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded for Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs for young prospects Kasperi Kapanen, Scott Harrington, Nick Spaling and a first-round draft pick today. The Pens also receive a second-round draft pick. Kessel had 25 goals in 82 games last year for the Leafs. He has scored more than 35 goals in his career three times. He has a salary of around $8 million over the next seven years, although one report indicated Toronto would be picking up part of that salary.
The Pens have lost defenseman Paul Martin, who signed a four-year deal with San Jose. Others signing with new teams today include Blake Comeau, Steve Downie, Taylor Chorney and Thomas Greiss.
