With the recent warm weather, many residents are returning to outdoor activities- such as enjoying nature at our local parks.
Moraine and McConnell’s Mill State Parks Manager Dustin Drew encourages people to be aware of their surroundings and to take precautions when heading out.
“A lot of it stems back to the fact that this time of year, it’s not light as long as it is say in the summer months and people definitely misjudge the amount of time it takes to hike,” Drew said.
Just last week, crews had to search for a man who was hiking with friends on a McConnells Mill trail when he became separated and lost. After six hours, the man was located.
Anyone planning on hiking should wear brightly colored clothes and proper footwear, take water, a compass, a map, and a flashlight even if you aren’t planning to be out after dark.
Although hikers could encounter wild animals like bears, Drew says ticks are always a concern for those who have spent some time in the woods.
