The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is continuing to pursue those who have failed to pay tolls.
In one effort, the commission is working with PennDOT to suspend the vehicle registrations of Turnpike toll violators who’ve racked up six violations or more than $500 in unpaid tolls and fees.
The commission is also working with 15 district attorneys to pursue theft of services charges against those who’ve failed to pay at least $2,000 in turnpike tolls and fees.
Ray Morrow- chief compliance officer for the turnpike- says the goal is to try and get people to pay their unpaid tolls before pursuing criminal charges.
“What we try to do is to get the people to pay before we actually have to take them through the criminal process,” Morrow said. “We’ve been successful- 49 people have either paid in full, or agreed to a payment plan.”
The turnpike issued its first round of criminal charges in May for drivers who have unpaid tolls. Data shows there were over 1,500 motorists in Butler County who owed more than $105,000 in outstanding tolls last year.
