Today is State Police Day.
It was 113 years ago today that the Pennsylvania State Police was created and signed into law by Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker. The department became the first uniformed police organization of its kind in the country and soon served as a model for other state police agencies through the U.S.
Officers from Troop D, which serve several counties including Butler, gathered on Wednesday at the barracks off New Castle Road in Butler Township to celebrate and also remember fellow troopers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
“Troop D has paid a very high price in the protection of our fellow Pennsylvanians,” Captain Steve Ignatz, commanding officer of Troop D, said.
Ceremonies were also held across the state.
