The Pennsylvania Senate is advancing legislation that would allow school districts to create a plan allowing their employees to possess a gun on school property.
Senator Don White, who serves constituents in Butler County, authored Senate Bill 383, which would give school boards the option of allowing licensed and trained staff to carry firearms on school property.
The bill passed the Senate Wednesday by a 28-22 margin and will now move onto the House of Representatives for consideration. Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf says he opposes it.
“If it becomes law, I think I’ll sleep better,” Sen. White said before Wednesday’s vote.
Employees would be required to have a concealed carry license and pass a psychological exam before they could carry a gun in school.
Sen. White said he was encouraged to move forward with this legislation following the stabbing at Franklin Regional School District in Allegheny County in April of 2014.
