Pennsylvania is again leading the nation in Lyme disease cases for the third straight year.
There were over 7,000 cases of Lyme Disease in the commonwealth in 2014.
Symptoms of the tick-borne disease can be diverse, including a rash, fever, joint pain and headache, making it difficult to diagnose. The state health department’s Dr. Loren Robinson said different doctors may prescribe slightly different treatments for Lyme Disease. The basic treatment is a course of antibiotics.
Some people may have some symptoms of Lyme disease, but may not be sure whether they actually have it. It could be as simple as getting a lyme disease test, to get a clear answer. Once this is confirmed, the treatment to get rid of this disease will be able to begin.
A recent task force convened on this issue recommended more state funding for research that could provide a gold-standard test for Lyme and clarify the best options for patients.
