School safety remains on the minds of state lawmakers as kids head back to class.
Pennsylvania lawmakers spent several days this summer conducting hearings and community forums on school safety and how best to address it.
The current state budget includes $60 million for local districts to enact safety measures according to their individual needs.
“There’s a $60 million new fund that guarantees at least $25,000 per school district,” State Rep. Mark Longietti of Mercer County. “It can be used for a variety of school safety measures: equipment, school resource officers, mental health issues, violence prevention.”
One lawmaker says a recent poll in his district named violence as the biggest concern among students as they return to the classroom.
