Members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives were sworn-in on Tuesday in Harrisburg.
Republicans continue to hold a majority in the House with 19 newly-elected Republican members. This is the fifth consecutive term that Republicans have retained majority control of the state House.
During Tuesday’s swearing-in ceremony in Harrisburg, Rep. Mike Turzai of Allegheny County was once-again elected speaker of the house.
The first Tuesday in January of odd-numbered years are set aside for the swearing-in of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Every seven years or so, the day falls on the New Year’s holiday.
The House adjourned for two weeks and will return to Harrisburg on Jan. 15 to begin the 2019-202 legislative session.
There was one big change in the Senate this session- the election of new Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman of Allegheny County, who beat former Lt. Gov. Mike Stack in last spring’s primary. Fetterman will preside over Senate sessions for the next four years.
