It’s been 15 years since motorcyclists in Pennsylvania were legally allowed to ride without a helmet and one advocacy group wants to make sure the helmet law is never reinstated.
A.B.A.T.E.- the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education- rallied at the state Capitol on Monday.
“It’s been 15 years since that historic bill signing. And all the naysayers who said horrible things would happen if Pennsylvania modified or repealed their helmet law…none of it happened,” lobbyist Charles Umbenhauer said.
Umbenhauer believe it’s necessary to rally annually in Harrisburg to head off continuing efforts to reinstate the helmet law in Pennsylvania.
“Despite all the progress that we’ve made making motorcycling safer… the one thing that has not changed is that the safety community still thinks the answer to motorcycle safety is a universal helmet law,” he said. “To that we simply say ‘hell no!’”
Several state lawmakers- including State Rep. Tedd Nesbit, who represents some residents in Butler County- showed up and spoke at the rally.
