The Pennsylvania Game Commission is warning residents about repeated local bear sightings.
An ear-tagged black bear sow and two cubs have been repeatedly spotted in areas south of Butler including Penn and Butler Townships.
These bears have become habituated to human activity and do not exhibit the fear expected from a wild bear around people. Last month one of the original three cubs was struck and killed by a vehicle on Saxonburg Road.
Efforts are underway to capture and relocate the remaining bears together. Residents of that area are asked to put away bird feeders, grills, and limit access to garbage.
Always check outside before letting pets into the yard, especially at night. If sighted, do not approach the bears. Instead call the Game Commission at 1-833-PGC-WILD.
