Farmland preservation in Pennsylvania has reached a milestone.
Doug Wolfgang- Director of the Bureau of Farmland Preservation at the State Department of Agriculture- says the State Farmland Board has reached the $1 billion mark in commitment to its preservation efforts.
Wolfgang says more than 5,200 Pennsylvania farms have been preserved as a result. In Butler County, another farm- the 53-acre Jordan Farm in Mercer Township- is expected to be donated to the county for preservation efforts this week. The commissioners will vote on the matter on Wednesday.
Wolfgang says preserving farmland in Pennsylvania is critical to the food supply.
Agriculture contributes over $135 million to the state’s economy each year.
