Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005, mandating changes in some of the features and procedures for issuing driver’s licenses and ID cards.
Pennsylvania’s state legislature wouldn’t have it though and in 2012 passed a law forbidding the Commonwealth’s compliance. What does that mean? Well, for starters – beginning this January 1st you won’t be able to use your driver’s license to gain entry into a federal building.
But wait – it gets better – on January 1st, 2018, your PA driver’s license will not be accepted as ID for flying on any airline.
“I pledge to continue to work with the legislature to overcome what I think is a bad piece of legislation,” Governor Wolf said. “It’s going to be very inconvenient.”
If nothing is done, you will need a Passport to get on an airplane beginning in 2018.
