A man was arrested early Wednesday following an overnight standoff with police at a home in Grove City.
The situation began about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when the Grove City Police Department were called to respond to a reported domestic incident.
When police got to the home on Sunset Avenue, a female, who was later determined to be the victim, came outside. A man, identified as 44-year-old Shawn Gifford, stepped onto the home’s front porch, brandished a handgun and allegedly threatened officers, before going back inside.
“The female was taken to safety and officers continued efforts to get the male to surrender to police,” according to a news release from the Grove City Police Department. “She reported that he was intoxicated and had refused to let her leave the residence and assaulted her during the incident.”
Officers allegedly tried to get Gifford to surrender for hours. The Mercer County Critical Incident Response Team was brought it, eventually forcing their way through the door and using gas to get the suspect to surrender. He finally did so about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Gifford remains in the Mercer County Jail, facing charges including aggravated assault and making terroristic threats.
