The Mars Area School Board is delaying a decision about their 2018-19 school year budget in order to give further consideration to issues, including staffing.
Administrators had previously proposed the possibility of eliminating a position at the Mars Middle School that had the primary responsibility of teaching individual music lessons.
However, that resulted in over 60 students and parents in attendance at Tuesday night’s school board meeting and 20 of whom addressed the board with concerns about the damage that would be caused by cuts being made to the music program.
School Board president Dayle Ferguson said that although she could not make any promises about specific positions, the board and administration never considered changing the music curriculum or eliminating course offerings.
The board plans to hold a special meeting at a day and time yet to be determined to take a final vote on the budget before the end of the month.
