Cleanup efforts are underway after an oil spill into the Connoquenessing Creek happened late last week.
We spoke with members of the Allegheny Aquatic Alliance, who help oversee the annual Connoquenessing Creek Cleanup each year. They say the spill originated near the AK Steel Plant 2 location—which is currently being torn down.
Details on the spill are still being investigated, but its impact is being felt right now. Oil catchers have been set up at various places along the Connoquenessing trying to gather the spilt oil.
It’s also impacting those who canoe and kayak. The Allegheny Aquatic Alliance says they were told that no one can be on the creek for at least another month in between the City of Butler and the Ash Stop boat launch.
