The horrific accident at the Ohio State Fair Wednesday that killed one person and injured seven others has many in Pennsylvania asking about how carnival rides here are inspected.
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture oversees the state’s amusement ride safety program. Rides must be inspected every time they are set up at a new location or at least once every 30 days. There are more than 1,400 certified inspectors in the state.
Officials say to look for the amusement ride registration plate with the current year sticker which is affixed on each ride. If you don’t see it, ask the ride operator to let you look at it. Ride operators are also required to have a copy of the most recent inspection report with the ride.
The state says it registers more than 800 amusement ride owners and 10,000 individual amusement rides and attractions annually.
