It seems there are more scams now than ever to be aware of, and the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities is warning of yet another.
This is called the ‘Tech Support Scam.’
Officials say it can come in various forms:
-Someone calls and claims they have identified your computer as being infected with a virus
-You receive an unsolicited email or pop-up message while browsing
-Or, you’re searching the internet for legitimate technical support and find a fraudulent advertisement
In some of these cases, scammers may take payment information from you and then never fix your computer. In other cases, a scammer could actually download “ransomware” onto your computer and you then won’t be able to access your files until you pay.
There are ways to protect yourself. Officials say to have current anti-virus software installed. If you get a phone call for someone claiming to work for a specific company like Microsoft of Apple, tell them you will call them back and look up the number yourself.
