The ongoing opioid crisis sweeping through western Pennsylvania- and the country- is having an effect on grandparents.
For a growing number of Pennsylvanians, opioid addiction means they are no longer able to care for their children- leaving the task to godparents, grandparents, and in some cases- great-grandparents.
Pennsylvania Aging Secretary Teresa Osborne says the state is making an effort to give voice to this emerging issue. State agencies have announced the creation of a Grandfamilies Work Group, which will spend the next 6 months coming up with ways to support this emerging segment of Pennsylvanians.
An estimated 89,000 grandparents (or other family member) are raising close to 100,000 children in Pennsylvania, numbers that Secretary Osborne says are increasing every day.
