With the possibility of spring storms looming, now is a good time to consider how to best avoid wasting food during a power outage.
According to Penn State Extension, preparing for a power outage is important as well as managing preservation when one occurs.
Tips to follow before an outage include storing ice packs in the freezer, stocking the pantry with non-perishable items, and lower the temperature of the fridge and freezer. If the power does go out, experts recommend checking the time as food will stay safe for about four hours if the door is not opened. Putting food outside is not advisable as wild animals could stop by to investigate.
