A nonprofit paper shredding business that provides job opportunities for visually impaired local residents has been awarded a $210,000 grant from the state.
Out Of Sight Shredding, located in East Butler, will use the money to expand and upgrade equipment, which will enable more materials to be processed and lead to increased work hours for current employees and the possibility of two additional part-time positions.
“That is really exciting for individuals with disabilities in our community,” Jennifer Bindernagel, Out of Sight Shredding Executive Director, told our newsroom. “In addition to new equipment, the company secured some large local medical contracts that will allow us to expand work hours by 3,100 hours annually.”
Out of Sight Shredding was created back in 2010 with two missions.
“We wanted to create a business that would financially support The Blind Association and to provide employment and employment training for individuals who are blind, visually impaired or have other disabilities within our community,” she said. “We recognized there were individuals who were graduating high school or graduating college who were very capable, reliable and dependable, but no one wanted to be the first one to give them an employment opportunity. That is where Out of Sight Shredding was established.”
All employees make minimum wage or above. All revenue generated goes back into the operating budget of The Blind Association.
The $210,000 grant will be funneled through the Butler County Department of Recycling and Waste Management.
