A new state law now allows motorists to treat a malfunctioning traffic signal as a stop sign.
According to State Act 101, which went into effect on Sunday (9/18), drivers can legally travel through a malfunctioning red light after initially stopping, as long as they use common sense and caution.
The law was initially proposed for bicycles and motorcycles which may not have enough metal to be detected by magnetic loops embedded in pavement at intersections. However, the bill was expanded to include any type of vehicles encountering a malfunctioning traffic signal.
Police are concerned that impatient motorists might interpret the new law as an invitation to run red lights by hastily concluding that they’re broken. Authorities will continue to issue citations for violations they witness.
