This month’s grand jury report on sexual abuse and coverup in the Catholic Church in Pennsylvania has resulted in legislation being proposed in Harrisburg.
State Representative Scott Conklin is sponsoring two bills- one would make religious organizations subject to institutional sexual assault charges, similar to correctional facilities and schools.
Another bill would make a continuing failure to report child abuse a first-degree misdemeanor. If more than one victim is suspected, it would be a third-degree felony.
A number of other bills in response to the grand jury report is expected when the House and Senate reconvene in September.
On Thursday, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shaprio said 840 people have called the state’s Clergy Abuse Hotline in the two weeks since the state’s grand jury report was released.
