The Butler Health System has their new lab technology operating and it’s the first for the hospital in a couple of ways.
First, it’s a machine that has a continual line with multiple stations linked together. Those stations include chemistry, immunology, and hematology.
This is an automated line that results in faster turnaround time as it can detect if a tube is correct for the test that has been ordered, if the tube has enough of a specimen to complete the test, and if the tube needs to be centrifuged. It will then automatically determine in which direction to send the tube in order to complete the job the fastest.
Dr. Robert Patterson, Pathologist with the Butler Health System, says it makes the work more efficient. He says a few years ago, parts of the system that the hospital had were needing to be replaced. Butler Hospital found the DxA 5000 that was in Europe. They went to the plant where the DxA 5000 was being produced in Munich and got information where it was installed in the Netherland.
In late 2019, some of the parts of this automated system started to arrive in Butler but got slowed down by COVID-19. It is currently operating at the Butler Health System and is the first U.S. hospital installation for this automated line.
