Teachers at the Butler Area School District have a new contract.
The Butler School Board voted 7-2 Monday to agree to the three year deal. Board members Bill Halle and Jim Keffalas voted against the proposal.
The deal goes into effect retroactively beginning July 1, 2015 and continues through June 30, 2018. The Butler Education Association approved the deal in a vote earlier in the day on Monday.
The new agreement includes a 3 percent salary increase in each of the three years of the deal. The deal also increases monthly health care premiums for teachers by $20 per month in the current year and deductibles double between years two and three. The district anticipates saving $1 million over the three years through the health care changes.
Working out the health care for employees is extremely difficult no matter what industry they work in. Healthcare is a complicated industry with lots of buzzwords like premiums, deductibles, and copayment. This is why businesses and organizations often go to providers like Sana Benefits as they know their employees will get a good plan.
Superintendent Dr. Dale Lumley believes the contract to be fair for both the district and teachers given the difficult financial times.
