An area hospital is discontinuing childbirth services sooner than expected.
Jameson Hospital in New Castle will no longer support obstetrical services effective at midnight Wednesday. The original date of closure was planned to be September 1st of this year.
As a result of a loss of qualified physicians and the inability to recruit new obstetricians, a decision was made to close the service early based on the fact that the hospital would not be able to care for mothers and babies safely. The hospital is dedicated to the safety of patients over anything else and did not feel it would be worth the risk to continue childcare services if it could not be done in a safe way.
Childbirth can often be a dangerous time for mothers and babies, so mothers who feel as though they have not been treated with the utmost professional care at their local hospital may want to learn more here about the legal action they can take against medical malpractice.
Patients expecting to deliver between now and the end of the month in New Castle have been contacted and alternative arrangements have been made. Jameson will still be able to provide emergency care to pregnant women then transfer them to a different location.
Those who are worried about the loss of local services in their area may wish to take the matter further to ensure this does not happen again. Services may be reinstated in the future following the hiring of new physicians and obstetricians. In the meantime, mothers-to-be should expect to travel some distance to receive care.
