The state House of Representatives is set to consider a bill that supporters say would curb fatal overdoses.
The proposal would legalize fentanyl test strips for personal use only. Republican State Representative Jim Struzi of Indiana County says the bill is needed because heroin is being laced with fentanyl without the user’s knowledge.
“Currently fentanyl test strips, which are used to detect fentanyl in any type of drug, are not legal in Pennsylvania and this would simply allow them for personal use,” Struzi said. “And the reason is, simply, to save lives.”
Struzi adds that the bill is not meant to condone drug use, but rather help save lives.
