The Mars Area School Board is using bids from private vendors to provide Custodial, Paraprofessional and Secretarial services during contract negotiations with current employees.
Superintendent Dr. Wesley Shipley said that bids were opened last week and the district received two proposals for secretarial services, two for paraprofessional services, and a total of seven for janitorial services.
In the most recent negotiation session, the union requested a fact-finder be appointed to take a closer look at the situation. It is expected to take several weeks to set a date for an appointment with an arbitrator. Support staff have been without a contract for the past year.
Three people spoke at Wednesday night’s school board meeting in opposition to the idea of contracting with an outside company to provide these services to the district. Mars employs around 95 total support staff employees.
