Union faculty and coaches at Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities could strike by the end of October.
Slippery Rock University in Butler County is one of the 14 state-owned schools.
A five-day negotiating session ended late Wednesday at a stalemate.
State system officials say they have offered to increase faculty compensation by 12 percent over the life of the multi-year contract. The raises would be depended upon the union accepting a healthcare plan that state system officials say is already in place for other university employees.
The proposal was rejected. The two sides agreed to meet for eight more negotiating sessions, including some this weekend.
The union announced it would strike no later than Oct. 30 if no deal was reached.
Faculty and coaches at the State System universities have been working without a contract since June 30, 2015. Students at the 14 universities are finishing their fourth week of classes this week.
