A portion of Route 356 in Winfield Township was closed for five hours Sunday following a crash that seriously injured at least one person.
The crash happened about 3 p.m. on North Pike Road- also known as Route 356- near the Chapelview Drive intersection (just past the Planet Mart).
First responders say the driver of a pickup truck was traveling north on Route 356 when he crossed the center line into opposing traffic and collided with a car. It was a near head-on crash with both drivers’ sides of the vehicles colliding.
Two women were trapped inside the car and had to be cut out by firefighters. A medical helicopter landed in a nearby field and flew the driver to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Sources say she underwent surgery for very serious injuries but is expected to recover. The other woman in the car was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
The driver of the pickup truck was reportedly not injured.
State Police had a portion of Route 356 closed for five hours as they reconstructed the crash. Police have not released any additional information but sources say charges are pending for the truck driver.
Crews were called back to Route 356 Monday morning for a crash reportedly involving a car into a pole. Power in the area was effected.
