As National Fire Prevention Week continues, local fire departments want the public to realize their need for new members.
The number of men and women donating their time to departments has dwindled over the years.
Assistant Fire Chief of the Butler Township Volunteer Fire Dave Bestwick joined The Rock Station 97.7FM Tuesday morning to talk about how special it is to be a part of such a group.
“It’s like family,” Bestwick said. “The camaraderie…you really can’t understand it until you’re apart of it. It’s something to see.”
Bestwick encourages young people to join their local department.
“We have a lot of fun doing what we do…and when the tones go off it’s time to be serious,” he said. “I was taught by my mom from a young age that you get out of a community what you put into it.”
Fire Prevention Week continues through Saturday. Anyone interested should call or stop by their local volunteer fire department to learn how they can help.
