A case of MRSA has been reported at Freeport Area High School.
Superintendent Ian Magness said the district was notified on Monday that one individual had contracted the bacterial skin infection. It was unknown whether the person, who is not being identified as either a student or employee, contracted it while at school.
Magness said the high school was vigorously disinfected Monday and Tuesday. Students were not in school either of those days because of spring break.
Students were back in the classrooms Wednesday and letters were sent home informing parents of what the district is calling an ‘isolated incident.’
“It wasn’t confirmed that the infection was contracted at the high school but we’re taking as many precautions are possible,” Magness said Thursday. “If there is ever a good time for something like this, this was it. We had a full 48 hours to vigorously disinfect.”
Butler County Community College closed their main campus for a day and a half earlier this week after a single case of MRSA was found in the Field House.
“That is completely coincidental,” Magness said.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, school closures due to MRSA are not usually necessary.
