The Slippery Rock University football team landed eight players at nine positions on the Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Region team that was announced Tuesday. Rock defensive end Marcus Martin was named the Super Region One Defensive Player of the Year and SRU landed six first team selections.
Martin earns his third Player of the Year honor of the season after also taking home the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division honor and the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association Super Region One honor.
Martin is joined on the first team defense by fellow lineman Joe Phillips and linebacker Teven Williams. Named to the first team on offense were linemen Cory Tucker and Joe LoSchiavo and running back Shamar Greene.
The Rock’s six first team All-Region selections will advance to the national ballot for the Football Gazette All-America team.
Linebacker Bob Vernick, Butler native, was named to second team honors on defense and Andrew Huska of Ford City, was named to third team honors as both a kicker and a punter.
Slippery Rock and Shepherd, the two teams that met in the Super Region One final, each tied for a region-high six first team selections. The Rock finished the 2015 season with a 12-2 overall record and a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals. The 12 wins tied the 1998 team for the most in school history
