District 9 baseball playoffs: Karns City defeated Cranberry 5-3 Wednesday. Moniteau defeated Brookville 6-3. The Gremlins and Warriors will meet for the D9 title next week.
In District 9 softball playoffs: Moniteau blanked Redbank Valley 10-0 in five innings. The two-time defending D9 champions will meet Cranberry in the title game after Cranberry eliminated Johnsonburg 8-5.
Butler high school senior Emily Horstman has been honored as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Athlete of the Week. Horstman won the 100 and 200-meter dashes at the WPIAL championships last week, setting a school record in the 200. She was also part of the winning 1,600-meter relay which also set a school record. She will be competing this weekend in the PIAA championships. Horstman will move on to Slippery Rock University next year.
Erik Bertrand of Pittsburgh won the West Penn Amateur Public Links Championship Wednesday at the Pittsburgh National Golf Club. He shot rounds of 68 and 70 to win by three strokes over Sean Knapp of Oakmont. Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock was third.
