A former Moniteau School District student has been charged after allegedly making a threat on social media.
Butler State Police Trooper Dan Kesten said the suspect- a 17-year-old male from Petrolia- made the threat Thursday night.
“He sent a message on SnapChat that contained a picture of six bullets, and a message saying ‘Don’t come to school tomorrow’,” Kesten said.
The message was sent to about 30 students. It’s unclear if the boy attempted to conceal his identity or sent the message from his named account. Kesten did not identify the boy.
Moniteau officials notified police about 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Investigators subsequently traced the alleged threat back to the boy, who was interviewed.
The boy didn’t say why he made the threat. He is now facing charges of terroristic threats and disorderly conduct in Butler County juvenile court.
Moniteau Superintendent Sean Arney said the district called parents about 6:30 a.m. Friday to explain the situation.
“The state police did an exceptional job investigating and reporting back to us,” Arney said. “I felt strongly that their investigation provided us with a safe opening (of school) today.”
He said school security remains the top concern for the district.
“We’ve hired three full-time police officers, put in medal detectors, bought radios…we absolutely take this very seriously,” he said. “It’s the number one concern of mine- the safety and security of our students and staff.”
