Damage could have been much worse as a result of a structure fire Monday night in Freeport Borough.
The Freeport Volunteer Fire Department was of eight departments responding to the 100 block of Washington Street shortly before midnight. Freeport Chief Steve Warheit:
“Fairly heavy smoke showing from the front of the structure. Once we got out of the truck and started looking around, we found we had a room and contents fire. We were able to make entry very quick and get a knockdown on the fire.”
One female resident required treatment at the scene but there were no serious injuries. The Red Cross is assisting residents and the scene was cleared in about three hours.
The state police fire marshal investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing but Warheit estimates the amount of damage to be $20,000 to $25,000.
“The structure isn’t livable at this point. There was, I would say, moderate fire damage mostly contained to what appeared to be the living room in the front of the building. There was heavy smoke damage across the first floor and minor to moderate water damage down in the basement. It will definitely be habitable but there’s going to have to be some restoration work that takes place.”
Warheit went on to say that the residents having interior doors shut limited how much the fire was able to spread as well as the amount of damage caused to the structure.
