On the first day of school, the South Butler County School District superintendent was already dealing with the district’s first issue of the year.
Officials say mold has been found in a classroom at the high school.
Superintendent Dr. David Foley says the district was notified Wednesday afternoon. The teacher and students using that room were immediately moved to a different part of the building. A Pittsburgh-based air quality company is expected at the school Thursday morning to provide recommendations on what should be done next.
Foley said dehumidifiers will be placed in humid classrooms to reduce the opportunity for mold growth.
The issue of mold was brought to the attention of district administrators earlier this week after three area rugs at the Primary Elementary School were found to be moldy. The rugs were thrown away; the rooms they were in were sanitized; and an air quality test was completed which came back OK.
In the meantime, a teacher from the high school asked that her room be tested for mold as well. Her room, an adjacent room and a third room were all tested. The third room came back as having 5,800 mold spores/square meter, which is above the recommended level of 2,000 spores/square meter.
“Based on this finding, the room with the positive test will remain vacant,” Foley said in a letter to parents.
Detailed test results are available on the district’s website.
