Tenants living in any of the 12 federally subsidized housing units run by the Butler Redevelopment Authority cannot use medical marijuana.
Authority board members unanimously voted Thursday to approve a lease addendum banning federally prohibited drugs and smoking, and prohibiting people who use medical marijuana from the authority’s rental housing.
Officials say the new rules affect 12 people living in authority rental units.
While medical marijuana use is allowed in Pennsylvania, it is not recognized as a protected medicine under the Americans with Disabilities Act, so those with disabilities using medical marijuana can’t challenge the rule in court.
Local officials say the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recommended the Butler authority ban medical marijuana since it remains illegal under federal law.
