Butler City Council plans to vote on a long discussed anti-discrimination ordinance at their regular monthly meeting on Thursday.
Mayor Tom Donaldson will introduce a motion that would establish a Human Relations Commission, which has been a topic of discussion at several city council meetings for over a year.
Donaldson said he remains opposed to the ordinance but is introducing the motion at the request of local pastors who, he says, would like to find out where council members stand on the issue. Although those for and against the ordinance have been discussing changes in recent months, the ordinance to be voted on Thursday is identical to the one previously introduced.
The ordinance was most recently tabled in July due to a pending court case. If the commission is created, it would allow residents who believe they have experienced discrimination in the city for any reason to receive mediation via a committee to air their complaint and, hopefully, resolve it.
