A bill that would allow parents to opt out masking requirements inside schools has passed the Senate education committee.
Advocates of the bill argue that it’s government overreach to require masks for students.
However, state Senator Lindsey Williams of Allegheny County argues that some parents are in favor of masking their children.
“I’ve heard from a lot of parents who are supportive of the mask mandate. I’ve also heard from many medical professionals who support a mask mandate in schools, and I’ve also heard from superintendents who say masks keep kids in schools,” Williams said.
The bill passed along party lines in the committee; even if it were to pass both chambers, Governor Tom Wolf is expected to veto the bill.
