Starling Marte hit a walk-off three-run home run 13th inning Sunday to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-3 comeback victory over the Oakland Athletics. The Pirates lost a 1-0 lead in seventh inning of the game, and had fallen behind 3-2 in the 13th before they pulled out the win, and took the three-game series. The win also moved the Bucs back above the .500 mark at 16-15 overall, despite dealing with numerous injuries.
Cole Tucker began the 13th inning with a single. Jung Ho Kang drew a walk, then Adam Frazier drove in Tucker with another base hit, prior to Marte’s home run.
Starting pitcher Jordan Lyles allowed just one run on five hits while pitching into the seventh inning.
The Pirates have another off-day today, then host the Texas Rangers for two games beginning tomorrow night. They are currently in fourth place in the National League Central Division, three games behind the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs took over first place by a half game over St. Louis last night, after completing a three-game sweep of the Cardinals. The Cubs have now won seven games in a row. St. Louis has lost four in a row.
After the two-game series with Texas, the Pirates begin a seven-game road trip, with the first four in St. Louis.
Over the weekend, the Pirates had to place Jameson Taillon on the Injured List with an elbow issue. Reliever Keone Kela also went on the I.L. with a shoulder problem. Steven Brault and Nick Kingham will move from the bullpen into the starting rotation for the games against the Rangers.
