Following an ordeal of alleged racism by Mars School District students at a football game earlier this month- which the district has unequivocally denied– the student body will be introduced to another anti-bullying program this week.
Mars Superintendent Wesley Shipley says the program is called “Rachel’s Challenge.” It’s based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott, one of the victims killed in the Columbine High School shooting.
“It’s a program not-so-much about anti-bullying, but a program about pro-kindness, or pro-doing the right thing,” Shipley said in an interview Friday. “It challenges people to be kind.”
Shipley says it’s been a great start to the year, and his administration will work to make sure that continues.
“Our students are working really hard and treating each other really well,” Shipley said.
Last school year, the discussion of bullying at Mars was brought to the forefront following a physical altercation between two students. Several students and parents then came forward alleging that bullying inside Mars schools has been a problem for years.
